Crystal Ballet releases trailer for ballet film Being and Nothingness

Described as ‘a pas de deux of dance and camera’, Being and Nothingness is an eight minute dance film starring Prima Ballerina Greta Hodgkinson and choreographed by Guillaume Côté. Originally danced live by The National Ballet of Canada (premiere Toronto Nov 22, 2013), the ballet has now been transferred to the small screen by Anymotion Productions, an independent company run by The National Ballet of Canada dancers who previously developed the award-winning Lost in Motion series.

Crystal Ballet, is a unique Netflix-style cultural service,  and is distributing this new work as part of its ‘Gems’: a series of unique and high quality works created by other companies, selected and showcased alongside Crystal Ballet’s own.

We are thrilled to be collaborating with Crystal Ballet for the release of Being and Nothingness. With this partnership, our dance film will have an international reach and be shared with an ever growing audience. – Etienne Lavigne, Executive Director, Anymotion Productions

Being and Nothingness is a reflection in dance of a key theme in Jean-Paul Sartre’s existential philosophy. Using the mesmeric repetitions of Philip Glass (Metamorphosis four), and a variety of subtly deployed choreographic strategies, Côté explores the shifting moments of consciousness that shape the nature of human identity constructed against the horizon of non-being.

Funded by a Kickstarter campaign and filmed on location at L’Abbaye d’Oka in Oka, Québec, Being and Nothingness was specifically produced to transcend the limitation of theatres and make the best of dance available to everyone in everyday settings. It joins a growing body of ballet works designed specifically for streaming online, which range from Lost in Motion and Genesis to Sergei Polunin’s interpretation of Hozier’s ‘Take me to Church’.
